Jon Rahm eagled the par-five fourth hole on Thursday but he has to make do with a par there today, as a seven-foot birdie attempt slides by the left side of the cup.

Three pars for this group.

  • In trouble off the tee...published at 13:55 British Summer Time 13 June

    Koepka -3 (5*)

Oh Brooks... it's only the tiniest of misjudgements off the 15th tee but his ball is straight into the rough, maybe two yards off the fairway. It hops forward into one of Oakmont's many, and notorious, ditches.

He is allowed to play out of there, but he might be better off taking a penalty drop and ruling out any possibility of injuring himself.

A great example though of how even being only a yard or two offline can be disastrously penal.

  • Hovland under parpublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 13 June

    Hovland -1, Morikawa E, Scheffler +2 (3*)

It's easy to cheer on a guy like Viktor Hovland, he was among the best players in the world a couple of years ago but has since struggled with all linds of swing and confidence problems.

He gives a great interview and is always honest and interesting, and it's great to see him finding something like his best here - as his second birdie of the day in just three holes moves him under par for the tournament.

There's still currently just nine players under par at the US Open.

One of the most popular snack stands at Oakmont is the Dog House.

Best seller is the Steel City hot dog, named after host city Pittsburgh.

Might need one as it’s going to be a long day.

    Koepka -3, Lee +5, Thomas +8 (5*)

A bit of fight from Min Woo Lee who rolls in a three-footer for birdie on the 14th - his second in three holes - and the Australian is trending nicely.

Justin Thomas also went pin-seeking and knocked in a four footer to arrest his slide.

Playing partner Brooks Koepka has already had a look at birdie from 18 feet, tapping in for a par.

    Im -1, Hatton +3, Straka +8 (3)

Im Sung-jae saves par on the third thanks to a wonderful chip from the back of the green to within five feet of the hole.

Meanwhile, it's been a solid start by England's Tyrrell Hatton. Three straight pars, he's found all three fairways off the tee and all three greens in regulation. Keep doing that and you won't go far wrong.

    Koepka -3 (4*)

The 13th is a mere flick with a wedge at 161 yards today and Brooks Koepka finds the heart of the green with his tee shot. But he can't convert the birdie putt that would have put him in a share of the lead.

A touch tentative but it's a simple tap-in. Pars are good.

    Rahm E, Spieth +2, Johnson +6 (3)

Ooof, almost a dream of a birdie putt on the third for Jon Rahm. His effort from about 40 feet looked to be tracking in right until the last second, until it ducked left and stayed up.

Dustin Johnson follows him in for four, but Jordan Spieth cards a second consecutive bogey and he is back to two over.

  • JT suffers nightmare on 12published at 13:28 British Summer Time 13 June

    Thomas +9 (3*)

Two-time major winner Justin Thomas is looking like he'd rather be anywhere than Oakmont right now.

A horrendous three-putt from three feet and what seemed a certain par is suddenly a double-bogey seven. A lapse in concentration that could cost the American the chance of making it through to the weekend.

He looks a little shell-shocked as he staggers off the green.

  • Stunning Scheffler parpublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 13 June

    Hovland E, Morikawa E, Scheffler +2 (2*)

Three pars on their second hole (the 11th) for this featured group, with Scottie Scheffler missing the fairway and having to just hack it out with his second, leaving him 124 yards away playing his third.

He needs to get this one close, and he shows exactly why he's the world number one by almost holing it! He flies the ball past the flag but it's got loads of swazz on the ball and it spins back to inside a foot to card a brilliant par.

South African Thriston Lawrence topped the charts yesterday with six birdies in his first round - that's some effort around Oakmont in the US Open.

And he beat some big names who managed five and came in second in the running for first-round birdie machine. If they play the same way today these are the guys worth keeping an eye on.

    First round birdies

    • 6 - Thriston Lawrence
    • 5 - Adam Scott
    • 5 - Sungjae Im
    • 5 - Carlos Ortiz
    • 5 - Viktor Hovland
    • 5 - Jordan Spieth
    • 5 - Chris Kirk
    • 5 - Sam Burns
  • Brooks one off leadpublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 13 June

    Koepka -3 (3*)

There's a big left-to-right borrow on this 26-footer for Brooks Koepka and he's judged that pretty well, his ball nestling a foot or so from the cup.

A kick-in birdie and he's one behind leader JJ Spaun.

  • Im drops a shotpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 13 June

    Im -1, Hatton +3, Straka +8 (2)

We'll probably be seeing this a lot on the second hole today - Im Sung-jae doesn't carry his approach far enough and his ball rolls off the front of the green, miles back onto the fairway.

He can't get up and down in two from there, so it's a bogey for Im.

    Koepka -2

The 12th is playing a mere 647 yards today. And that proves no bother for Brooks Koepka who follows a 358-yard drive with a 276-yard second to 26 feet.

Big eagle chance coming up for the American.

    Rahm E, Spieth +1, Johnson +6 (2)

Jon Rahm goes left off the third tee - so far left, in fact, that he eludes the Church Pews bunker altogether and rolls along the fourth fairway.

Not a bad spot to finish, actually!

Rahm gained 3.36 strokes off the tee in round one - the best in the field.

    Fox +1 (4*)

    Ryan FoxImage source, Getty Images

New Zealand's Ryan Fox is one of the few players under par for their rounds in the early part of day two.

He bogeyed the 11th, but picked up shots on the 10th and 13th to move to one over for the championship.

Fox has come into the US Open on the back of victory at last week's Canadian Open.

  • Spieth drops a shotpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 13 June

    Rahm E, Spieth +1, Johnson +6 (2)

Jordan Spieth finds the rough from the second tee and he must have a pretty bad lie in there because his second shot travels forward about three yards. He finds the green with his third, but it will be a dropped shot for the 2015 US Open champion.

A tremendous lag putt from the front of the green helps secure a par for Jon Rahm.

  • Birdie for Wallacepublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 13 June

    Wallace +1 (2)

The pin on the second hole is incredible today, tucked right at the back of the green and everyone will come up way short as there's just no future going long.

England's Matt Wallace comes up 20 feet short, which is a pretty decent effort, with his approach, but he manages to roll it in for a birdie to get back to just one over par and into the top 20.

  • Snowman caps disastrous startpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 13 June

    Chandler +16 (3)

Sights we like to see at the US Open - professionals being made to look like us.

I wonder what Will Chandler had for breakfast this morning. Maybe he was running late and had to skip the driving range too because the 27-year-old US Open debutant has had the kind of start you and I might expect to when rocking up two minutes before your tee-time.

The left-hander opened with successive double bogeys and then hit his drive into the 'Church Pew' bunker down the third. A chop out of there, and then his third found the green but had too much spin and rolled back off the front.

He chipped on with his fourth but then raced his 40-foot putt off the green, and took three more from there for a quadruple-bogey and he's eight over after three holes.

  • Hovland lands a monster birdiepublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 13 June

    Hovland E, Morikawa E, Scheffler +2 (1*)

What a game this is! Viktor Hovland was one of the worst putters on the course yesterday, and so what does he do? Well he starts by draining a long, curling birdie putt from just over 50 feet on his opening hole of course!

Scottie Scheffler also sticks in a birdie on the 10th - although that's a tiddler in comparison from a mere 20 feet...
