JJ Spaun is human - playing his 21st hole of this year's US Open, he drops his first shot and therefore drops into a share of the lead with Sam Burns - who has already finished his second round - and Thriston Lawrence - who is yet to start round two.

A chip from the back of the third green doesn't get the run he requires and a par putt from about 15 feet doesn't drop.

Here's what the late wave of starters are facing today at Oakmont, as the USGA have upped the ante from yesterday with some of today's flags clinging on to the edges of these massive, sloping greens at Oakmont. These are not easy...

A pair of American stars in this group head off in opposite direction at the start of their second rounds - with Xander Schauffele making an opening birdie on the 10th while defending champion Bryson DeChambeau makes a bogey.

Rory McIlroy adopts a horrible looking stance on the first, which looks a little like he's on the toilet. His ball is towards the left edge of the bunker and it flops out of the sand only to land straight in the rough 10 yards away.

The Northern Irishman gets himself out of there but his ball is picking up pace as it zips on to the putting surface and veers off left into the long stuff. His fourth heads 20 feet past. Was he hoping that was going to trickle back down to the pin? All of a sudden he'll be faced by a lightning fast putt for bogey.

It's going to be a double to start, one stroke worse than Thursday on the same hole. What a shocking start.

Adam Scott could have made it two birdies in the first two holes but the Aussie misses a seven-footer for a three on the second.

Playing partner Hideki Matsuyama almost has a tap-in for a birdie to move to three over for the tournament, while Ludvig Aberg gets in trouble off the tee and makes bogey.

A great second round for Jason Day has ensured the former US PGA champion will make the cut.

The Australian misses a 12-footer for par on the ninth - his last - but he'll definitely be happy with a round of 67 that has left him at three over par for the tournament.

He's currently tied for 25th but with players above him likely to drop back towards him, he will probably be a whole lot further up the leaderboard by the close of play tonight.

Disappointing end to the day for Scottie Scheffler, who has been scratching and clawing his way around Oakmont and eventually signs for a one-over round of 71.

Considering some of the shots he played that's a tremendous return and just shows what a fighter he is.

The cut is currently at five over, but only just as 58 players are on four over or better and the top 60 make the weekend - but conditions looks tough this afternoon and that's predicted to climb.

It'll still be a slightly nervy wait for the world number one though.

Oakmont left Rory McIlroy lost for words on Thursday.

The Northern Irishman skipped chatting to the media for a fifth straight day at the majors, if you throw in the four times he swerved the press at last month's US PGA Championship, and will be looking for a fast start given his horrible finish yesterday.

The current Masters champion was looking in good shape at two under after nine holes of his first round.

But things unravelled on his back nine with four bogeys and a double bogey to leave him with plenty of work to do to get back into contention.

He begins Friday at the scene of all his problems almost 24 hours ago and immediately finds the fairway bunker down the left.

JJ Spaun is slightly off target with his second shot to the second hole, but no major harm done for the tournament leader.

He stretches his run of holes without a bogey to 20 - he's the only player in the field yet to card one at this year's US Open.

Viktor Hovland knocks in a nice par saver on the last to ensure he ends round two under par for the tournament - just the one under but that's still good enough to be tied for fifth.

It could've been a lot better for Hovland who had that chip-in eagle and five further birdies during the day, but had three bogeys and one really disappointing double to slightly sour his day.

The double and one of the bogeys came from mental mistakes as well so that'll be annoying, but on the plus side his game looks in great shape and he putted really nicely today.

Hovland is right in the fight for this title.

We said at the start of his round earlier on that a solid day's work for Tyrrell Hatton would ensure he makes the cut and he's done just that.

An chip-in for eagle on the 12th was the undoubted highlight of a level-par 70.

What a start from Adam Scott - the veteran plonks his approach to the first within six feet and he sinks his birdie putt to move to one under par.

Rory McIlroy's approach play overall was poor yesterday, ranking 133rd in the field in strokes gained, and some poor decisions out of the rough also cost him.

It could not be clearer where Shane Lowry and Justin Rose can improve today either, as they were statistically two of the worst putters in the field during the first round.

In fact, Lowry and Rose ranked 154th and 155th for strokes gained putting in round one - out of a field of 156...

This does not look good. Sam Burns skips over the ditch into the fescue and big trouble off the ninth tee.

So much so that the American has no hesitation taking a penalty drop from there. He zips into 22 feet on the undulating putting surface and sinks his par putt to a huge roar.

That was superb and worthy of the 65 he's gone round this brute of a course in today.

A well-played opening hole by JJ Spaun.

He has a look at a 35-footer for birdie but he'll be happy enough to start with a par.

Barring a big score on the last, Tyrrell Hatton should be around for the weekend. He makes a birdie three on the short par-four 17th to get back to level par for his round.

A frustrating day for Jon Rahm ends with the Spaniard's lengthy par effort just sliding past the hole and so he drops a shot on the 18th. He'll sign for a five-over 75.

He'll be around for the weekend though, as Jordan Spieth should be after a closing par to stay five over for the tournament.

Dustin Johnson won't be repeating his 2016 victory at Oakmont, though, after failing to make a birdie in his second-round 75.

Right then, the final hole of the day here and Viktor Hovland hits a lovely looking power fade off the tee, which looks great in the air but just creeps into the first cut.

Scottie Scheffler is off target again though as he dumps his tee ball into the right rough and using three wood he's a bit further back as well.

Brooks Koepka could really do with a birdie on the ninth but after finding the fairway bunker down the right - and it could have been a lot worse - he can only punt out.

He will need to get up and down from around 130 yards just to save par. Anywhere else and he'd have a decent shout of doing that. At Oakmont well, it's low percentage stuff.

His wedge shot nips in to 35 feet and it's two putts from there for a bogey and a four-over 74 today.

At least he'll be around for the weekend unlike his playing partners Min Woo Lee and Justin Thomas, who look sure to miss the cut.
